cRIO vs cDAQ: When to Reach for Each

If you’ve ever spec’d out a National Instruments system, you’ve hit this fork in the road. Both platforms take the same C Series modules. Both measure the same signals. So why do they cost so differently, and which one does your job actually need?

The short version

A cDAQ needs a computer. It’s built to plug into a PC and stream data back to LabVIEW running on Windows. That’s great when you’re on a bench, logging test data, or running a station where an operator is watching a screen. You get a lot of channels for the money and it’s quick to stand up.

A cRIO runs on its own. It’s got a real-time processor and an FPGA inside, so it can make decisions and close a control loop with no PC in the picture. That’s what you want when the box has to sit in a machine, run unattended for months, and not miss a beat even if somebody bumps a network cable.

How we pick

We ask a couple of plain questions. Is a person going to be sitting there watching it, or does it need to run by itself? Does it just measure, or does it have to control something on tight, repeatable timing? Measure and watch usually points to cDAQ. Control and walk away points to cRIO.

And here’s the nice part. The modules move between them. So if a bench project grows into a permanent machine, you’re not throwing your I/O away.
